CHAPLAINS REPORT
Priest:
Christmas is the feast of
childhood. The day itself is set aside
by the Christian world to honour the Christ Child. In the home much of the feast is given over to the children. However we must not let the worldly spirit
of Christmas overshadow the true and original spirit. Some thought should be given to the Christ child and to His crib.
was more than a temporary
shelter. True at the time, Mary needed
a roof over her head; she needed the privacy and seclusion of the stable. In a sense it was a temporary home and in
this sense it was the first Christian home, since it was the first earthly
dwelling of Our Lord. Furthermore this
rough stable with all its humble surroundings was a child-centered home. When Mary and Joseph selected it they did so
because they thought of the child. Had
it not been for the child they would not have chosen it. The center of their care and love was the
unborn Christ child.
Just as the stable of Bethlehem and later the home in Nazareth, focused all the attention on the child dwelling there, so also should the Christian home be child-centered. God has granted children to most homes. Since these young ones give a new purpose to the family, the husband and wife should center their attention on the youngsters. Their rearing and training can never be ignored; their welfare must be considered continually. Family plans and activities should be centered around them.
