CHAPLAINS REPORT

Brothers;

                Candlemas:  February 2nd – when Jesus was 40 days old, Mary and Joseph took Him to the temple in Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord.  At this time also Mary went through the ceremony of purification prescribed for a mother who has given birth to her first boy child.

                While the Holy Family was in the temple, a saintly old man named Simeon walked up to them.  He took the child Jesus in his arms and told God he was ready to die—his eyes had seen the Saviour.  He called Jesus “a light of revelation to the gentiles, and a glory for Thy people Israel.”

                The Church celebrates these events on February 2nd, teach of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  Recalling the words of St. Simeon, the priest blesses the candles before Mass. The candles are lit to honour Christ the Light of the world.  The feast is called Candlemas, the Mass of the Candles.

                It is customary for Catholics to obtain blessed candles for their homes on this day.  They are lighted in time of sickness or danger.  They are placed on the table in the sickroom when the priest comes to bring the Sacraments of the sick.

                Catholics should gladly make use of the sacraments and special blessings of the Church.  It is true that these are elements in the practice of the faith which are of greater importance.  The keeping of the commandments, for instance and the right use of the sacraments, especially of Confession and Holy Communion.  To neglect these essentials, while being strongly attached to the securing of the blessed candles, ashes and palms, is to have things badly out of proportion.

                Nevertheless it remains true that the Church places high value on her blessings and sacramentals.  They serve to lift up a man’s heart in the service of God.  They give him an opportunity to prove that he wishes to subordinate all that he is and all his material possessions to God’s will.  And because their right use inspires good and devout thoughts, they serve as a channel through which God’s grace comes down into a man’s soul.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Leo Lariviere

Chaplain

GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT

Brothers;

I can’t believe how fast January has flown by. There were many functions in January starting with the McGregor Clumbian Club Appreciation Night. Thanks to our Manager Sue & the Columbian Club Board for cooking & serving the food. It was a great time had by all who were there.

On January 17th, we had our Annual Euchre Tournament. Thank you to Brothers Fred Dufour & PGK Vic Renaud for once again chairing this annual event. As always this was very successful and a very good time had by all who were in attendance.

The Squires & Squirettes held there annual retreat @ Oxley on January 16th, 17th & 18th. I was very fortunate to be able to attend the Saturday morning session. Thanks to the Councilors for organizing such an important event for our leaders of the future.

On Saturday January 24th, St. Clements Parish held their annual steak barbeque fundraiser. Very well attended as always. The proceeds are going towards the new hall they will be building. Thanks to all of you for supporting this very important project.

Thanks to PGK Gord Renaud for his help this past month with two (2) very important meals. Gord prepared all the sliders for the Members General Dinner Meeting & also the Seniors Day on January 21st. Thanks to Gord, the Ladies Auxilliary & staff for all their help. Gord has generously donated his talents for our Annual Chicken & Slider Fund Raiser which will be held on Friday February 20th. Tickets are once again $ 8.00. Please see one of the Bartenders, Myself or one of our executive for tickets. Hopefully the weather is good this year & we can raise good money for all the good work we do.

Thanks to Brother Derek Renaud for chairing the Annual Council Free Throw competition. It was held on Tuesday January 13th at Ste. Ursule school. Thank you to the School for allowing us to use their facilities. All Free Throw winners and their families are invited to our February Dinner meeting. Thanks also goes out to Mary Ann Renaud and all the people involved.

On Saturday February 21st, our very own K of C Bowling team are holding there annual Steak Barbeque. Please support this function, as it helps offset the costs they incur to represent our council @ the International Tournament. This year is just across the bridge in Sterling Heights Michigan. Every year the McGregor K of C # 2844 come home with a lot of hardware. We have some of the best bowlers @ the entire tournament.

Be sure to mark down February 28th, 2004. That is the date for our Annual Beach Party. Tickets are $ 14.00. You have a choice of steak or chicken & a lot of fun. Our chairman for this event is Bro. Dave & Debbie Taylor, Jerry & Becky Drouillard and Chuck & Marla Roy. Please see Dave for tickets, the Clubroom Bartender or anyone of our executive. This is a major fundraiser for our council & the 4th Degree.

Car Raffle tickets have finally arrived. Unfortunately they arrived very late this year. Please see any of your executive, myself or the Clubroom Bartender for tickets. We want to at least try & sell what was sold last year. The proceeds go to a very good cause for the Arthritis Society. We as a council also make money from these tickets. However it is all based on what we sell. The tickets are once again $2.00 each or a book of five (5) for

$5.00.

Fish Fry(s) for the month of February are sponsored by the K of C. If you can, please volunteer to help out.

Before I close for the month, please keep our PGK Elie Bertrand & his wife Linda in your prayers, as Linda’s sister passed away.

Please have a great month & Brothers remember, “ Get Involved In Your COUNCIL” !

Fraternally Yours,

Chuck

Charles Roy

Grand Knight

DISTRICT DEPUTIES REPORT

Dear Brothers;

                The month of February promises to be a busy month. The councils should have their free throws finished and we will be completing the District level in February. The poster contest will be at the District level for judging to move on to the Zone level for March 1st. The Regional level of the Free Throw will be held at Ecole Secondaire E. J. Lajeunesse School, 600 E.C. Row Avenue in Windsor on February 28th. Registration and practice at noon till 12:45 PM and competition at 1:00 PM. Participants must have credentials with them as well they need to know the Council name, number, city and the district they represent. They must also have gym shoes. Council free throw Chairmen are welcome to help. If you have any questions on the Regional free throw ask me at the district level, maps will be available as well for the winners.

The councils need to also start to get back into the membership drives for the last half of the year. If your council is not having their next blitz in January then they should be having one in February. I met with the other District Deputies in the Windsor and Essex County area and we discussed many of the upcoming degrees. We are trying to make sure that all the degree teams are utilized to their full potential. We also meet with the captain of the Third Degree Team and discussed the way we could help the degrees run much smoother. I will be supplying the Grand Knights and the Membership Chairman with a list of these upcoming degrees so we can get the new members through in a timely fashion. There are third Degrees in March and April already planned and we want to insure that they are full of new members to help all the councils meet their quotas. So once again I am asking the membership to help their council’s achieve their membership goals. If you know of a potential member please make the effort to ask him to join. The number one reason that most men have not joined yet is because no one asked them.

Fraternally

Gordon Edwards

District Deputy, District 88
