CHAPLAINS REPORT

Brothers,

Candlemas:  February 2nd – when Jesus was 40 days old, Mary and Joseph took Him to the temple in Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord.  At this time also Mary went through the ceremony of purification prescribed for a mother who has given birth to her first boy child.

While the Holy Family was in the temple, a saintly old man named Simeon walked up to them.  He took the child Jesus in his arms and told God he was ready to die—his eyes had seen the Saviour.  He called Jesus “a light of revelation to the gentiles, and a glory for Thy people Israel.”

The Church celebrates these events on February 2nd, teach of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  Recalling the words of St. Simeon, the priest blesses the candles before Mass. The candles are lit to honour Christ the Light of the world.  The feast is called Candlemas, the Mass of the Candles.

It is customary for Catholics to obtain blessed candles for their homes on this day.  They are lighted in time of sickness or danger.  They are placed on the table in the sickroom when the priest comes to bring the Sacraments of the sick.

Catholics should gladly make use of the sacraments and special blessings of the Church.  It is true that these are elements in the practice of the faith which are of greater importance.  The keeping of the commandments, for instance and the right use of the sacraments, especially of Confession and Holy Communion.  To neglect these essentials, while being strongly attached to the securing of the blessed candles, ashes and palms, is to have things badly out of proportion.

Nevertheless it remains true that the Church places high value on her blessings and sacramentals.  They serve to lift up a man’s heart in the service of God.  They give him an opportunity to prove that he wishes to subordinate all that he is and all his material possessions to God’s will.  And because their right use inspires good and devout thoughts, they serve as a channel through which God’s grace comes down into a man’s soul.

Yours in Christ

Fr. Leo Lariviere, Chaplain

COLUMBIAN CLUB REPORT

Dear Brother Knights,

I’ve been a little under the weather lately and wasn’t able to be at the fish fry on January 14th.  According to all reports Eli Bertrand my partner in crime did an excellent job overseeing this event.  Over 300 people were served that night and many thanks go out to all who volunteered their time and expertise.

The Anderdon Tavern closed their business on December 31st and our club seized the opportunity to purchase their chicken broasters, a double deep fryer, as well as miscellaneous kitchen articles.  I would like to thank Chris Bergeron, Don and Matthew Coyle, and my son Jesse for their assistance in moving these articles to our hall.  I would also like to thank Becky Drouillard and our custodian Janice for all their effort in cleaning these pieces of equipment.  Our kitchen is undergoing a substantial update and we hope to have most of the changes completed in another week.  A big thankyou also goes out to brother Murray Kirzinger who has been helping me with the renovation.

We will be offering “Broasted Chicken” every weekday along with our regular lunch menu, and as a third option at our fish frys.  Although the times and days are still being determined we intend to offer “Broasted Chicken” for take out or eat in.  We are currently looking at 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  This could be expanded if the demand is there.  The Columbian Club board thinks that by going into the “Broasted Chicken” business we will be better able to serve our members and the community at large.

Fraternally Yours,

Gary Gardin

Columbian Club President

DISTRICT DEPUTIES REPORT

Dear Brother Knights,

The month of February promises to be a busy month. The councils should have their free throws finished and we will be completing the District level in February. The poster contest will be at the District level for judging to move on to the Zone level for    March 1st. The District is running an essay contest for the first time in a long time. Thanks to Father Mat George of Maidstone. The district councils have supplied him with the resources to award prizes to the winners. Good luck to the participants. The Regional level of the Free Throw will be held in early in March. Participants must have credentials with them as well they need to know the Council name, number, city and the district they represent. They must also have gym shoes. Council free throw Chairmen are welcome to help. If you have any questions on the Regional free throw ask me at the district level, maps will be available as well for the winners.

In February the councils need to get back into the membership drives for the last half of the year. If your council did not have a blitz in January then they should be having one in February. I met with the other District Deputies in the Windsor and Essex County area and we discussed many of the upcoming degrees. We are trying to make sure that all the degree teams are utilized to their full potential. I have been supplying the Grand Knights and the Membership Chairman with a list of the upcoming degrees so we can get the new members through in a timely fashion. There are third Degrees in February and April already planned and we want to insure that they are full of new members to help all the councils meet their quotas. So once again I am asking the membership to help their council’s achieve their membership goals. Work with your membership chairman at the churches to meet the potential new members. Do not let him appear to be working alone. We all know this is not how we get things done in the Knights. If you know of a potential member please make the effort to ask him to join. The number one reason that most men have not joined yet is because no one asked them.

Fraternally Yours,

Gordon Edwards

District Deputy, District 88
