CHAPLAINS REPORT
Brothers,
To you and to the members of
your family I wish a holy, happy and prosperous New Year filled with God’s choicest blessings! That will be my prayer and wish for you at
Mass on New Year’s Day.
On New
Year’s day, family, relatives and friends will extend greetings to people near
and far. We will hear and speak best
wishes for peace and for joy and for happiness. Today, at the start of the year
the Lord comes to offer us His best wishes: “Peace to men of good will.”
Christ’s wishes are not like
those of others nor does He present them in the same way. Human beings can only give of what they
have. And when everything is said and
done, that boils down to an exchange of human things. But the Lord gives us things of
God and He gives them to us in His
own divine way. His gifts to us are so
great; Christ gives us Himself as our daily bread. That is His first and most wonderful gift. Mary is His mother and He does not keep her
to himself. When she became His Mother
it was so that she became our Mother.
She is the protector of all those who believe in her Son.
May all this remind us of what
we are in God’s plan and what He is doing to help us achieve our eternal
happiness, May this double gift of God
(Christ and His Mother) fill us with peace and hope at the beginning of this
New Year. That way we will go through
the whole year with joy in our hearts knowing the treasures we possess. That, my brothers, will be our greatest
consolation in this valley of tears.
Yours
in Christ,
Fr. Leo Lariviere

Brothers,
The busy month of December is over and I hope that everyone had a
joyous Christmas Holiday. It was a time
to renew our faith, enjoy our friends and embrace our families.
The cold month of January is upon us and our council is still as
active as ever. This month’s Fish Fries are on the 10th and 24th. The K of C Dinner Meeting is scheduled for
the 8th - Chicken and Sliders are guaranteed unless the chicken gets
hit trying to cross the road. The
seniors party (for those of you that are young at heart) is on the 15th. Next on our agenda is Spaghetti Night on the
17th with the Euchre Tournament being played out on the 18th. On the 25th we will have the St.
Clement Church BBQ and I hope that we will have a sell out crowd. The month is finished off with the Super
Bowl Sunday bash on the 26th.
There are many activities this month and I hope that you will come
out and show your support. I certainly
look forward to seeing you.
Thought for the month: “Youth is , after all, just a moment, but it is the moment, the spark that you always carry in your heart.” - Risa Gorbachev

DISTRICT DEPUTIES REPORT
Dear
Brothers,
I trust that
everyone had a great Christmas and a safe New Year. On December sixth and
seventh I attended the State District Deputies meeting in Toronto. I brought
the changes in some of the form structures as well as the changes in the car
raffle ticket returns to the District eighty-eight meeting in McGregor on
December sixteenth. During the weekend in Toronto the State Deputies in one of
his reports made the statement that he loved being our State Deputy. After he
made that statement I began to reflect on my own feeling about being your
District Deputy. I came to the conclusion that my feelings mirrored that of the
State Deputy’s I really enjoy being your District Deputy. At the District
meeting your executives showed their confidence in me by electing me to
represent our District as the Zone six representatives for the Supreme
convention in August. I will up date the councils on this event as more details
become available to me.
We are beginning a new year and the next half of our fraternal year.
The State Board is concerned that we need to work harder at retention. It is up
to all our members to try to spread the word and to get the members out to the
meetings. Getting more members active can help your councils get new ideas for
council programs. Councils that have a large variety of different programs tend
to have more active members. These activities help keep members involved and
makes your presence known in your church and community. What better way to
attract new members than by spreading the good word of the knights through your
actions in the community? Try to get your young members involved; do not
discourage them if they bring forth ideas at a meeting. Many times I hear we
tried doing that ten years ago and it did not work. Maybe it was an idea ahead
of its time and will work well now or needed a little tweaking to make it a
fantastic program. Rather than let the cold weather keep you in the house with
nothing to do join your brothers at your monthly meeting. Just remember that no
matter if you are a first or third degree member it is your meeting. It is not
just up to the executive to make a council great it is up to all the
membership. So make it a New Years resolution to get out to your council
meetings, try to get other members to go with you and bring in at least one new
member this year. I am looking forward to meeting more new members as I visit
the councils in District Eighty-eight this year.
Fraternally

Edwards

Deputy

COLUMBIAN CLUB REPORT
Brothers:

HAPPY NEW YEAR! The Columbian Club Board and our employee
staff wish to extend a very Happy New Year to all our members and patrons. Our employee staff wishes to thank the
patrons for the generous stocking stuffer gifts last month. Your generosity was most appreciated.
FOOD DROP-OFF: Each year the Squires have
hosted a drop-box site in the Clubroom’s lobby entrance. This has been so successful that Councilor
Ron Hamlin arranged for a ‘permanent box’ to be established. The box is a
beautiful piece oak
furniture and we welcome any donations throughout the year. Thanks to Ron and the Squires.

Ladies Auxiliary Fish Fry volunteers for December: Gary Dufour, Russ Dalpee,
Frank & Deirdre Van der Pryt, Jim & Margaret Biggs, Kevin Langlois, Al

McGREGOR SENIORS COMPLEX
The McGregor
Seniors Complex Committee has worked very hard over the past 3 years to design
a world class facility for the seniors in the McGregor area. This complex will have all of the amenities
of our competition and more. Seniors
that have attended our monthly meetings gave us enormous input into what they
would like to see in this facility.
This last year has been the
biggest challenge since we started. We
tried getting the proper information to you by advertising in the local newspapers
but we got a poor response. So now we
did a direct mailing to each member’s home last month.
The “McGregor Seniors Complex
Inc.” is a non profit corporation.
It has a 7-member board of directors that meet at least once a
month. It’s main objective is to build
affordable housing for seniors aged 55 years or older and offer them care in
their golden years.
We took the “condo” and the
“rest home” concepts and put them together under one roof. This allows you to live as independently as
you would in your own home, but as you grow older and you need more care, all
of the services of a rest home would be readily available to you. Sounds too good to be true!! The reason you don’t see other places like
this is that they are very difficult to build since “non-profit”
corporations don’t have the cash flow like big “for profit” corporations
which means the money has to come from the people buying the units.
The majority of the people we
have talked to say they are not ready to leave their homes yet. While that may be true, you have to plan
ahead in life. If you were to become
ill, where would you go? Maybe you
would be lucky enough to have a family to care of you or maybe you would be
forced to go to our competition and pay $1600 to $2200 per month per
person. Why not look at purchasing a
unit now, and the board will help you to find someone to rent it until you are
ready to move in. If you buy it now and
rent it out you can make 10% return on your investment, and the people renting
it are still going to save $600 a month.
Then when you are ready to move in your unit will be there, like money
in the bank!
The pre-construction price of
these units was set over a year ago. At
that time we took into consideration increases in material and labour, but no
one would have thought it would increase as drastically as it has in the last 6
months. We are committed to hold the
price for these units for the time being however once construction starts these
prices will no longer be available.
Prices will be going up! So if
you want the best price now is the time to put down your $1000 deposit.
If you want more information or
have any questions please give us a call.
Sincerely,
Phil
Lefrancois
President
McGregor
Seniors Complex Inc.

McGREGORETTES LADIES AUXILIARY
I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday
celebrations. Welcome to 2003!

Even though attendance was low
due to inclement weather, the Christmas spirit at the McGregorettes Dec. 2/02
Wine and Cheese Social was abundant.
Fun entertainment was provided by the “Bearded Sisters”, a delightful
volunteer group of K. of C. men from the Essex Council . Their “Sister Act” talents delighted all
present.
“Thank You” to the area
merchants and to the McGregorettes Members for their many door prize donations
which were raffled. Food was plentiful
thanks to all who contributed to the buffet share table. Also thanks to all the ladies who helped
organize the event, who helped with the punch and wine, the raffle and
attendance tables and setting up and cleaning up. Could not have done it without all of you!
PLEASE NOTE: There will
be NO McGregorettes meeting in January 2003 due to lack of quorum
of executive members.
Nominations for the 2003
executive will be re-opened at the February meeting. Anyone wishing to run for a position on the executive but is
unable to attend the February meeting must submit a letter of intent. A steak or chicken dinner will be served to
all PAID-UP MEMBERS February 17,2003 before the elections.
Late dues for the McGregorettes
