Brothers,
What is a practicing
Catholic? In the application form to
become a Knight of Columbus, a priest has to affirm as to the candidate being a
“practicing Catholic”. It is the same for
someone applying for the position of teacher in the
Fr. Ted Colleton, author of the
book “Yes I’m a Radical” gives an amusing anecdote. “I remember a country parish in
Some of our politicians consider
themselves to be practicing Catholics but in matters of life and death {the
abortion issue} will sit on the fence.
The teaching of Christ and the Church on abortion is very clear……it is
called an unspeakable crime at any time from the moment of conception. Can you call them practicing Catholics?
Some Catholics will say that
they do not believe in the sacrament of confession which Jesus Christ gave to
his Church for the forgiveness of sin.
To pick and choose the teachings
of Christ and His church according to one’s whim, rejecting the ones that are
not in keeping with one’s fancy and style of life are certainly not the
criteria of being a practicing Catholic.
A practicing Catholic accepts the totality of what the Church believes
and teaches. Our faith is not an easy
one…but our Lord made it clear when He said “Unless you take up your cross
daily, you cannot be my follower”. There
is no such thing as faith without the cross.
Yours in Christ
Fr. Leo Lariviere, Chaplain

GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORTBrothers,
I cannot believe how fast my 1st
year as Grand Knight has gone by. We have had a very successful year at our
Council. The many fundraisers, barbecues, the many
charities we have donated to, and the many new members who have went through
their degrees over the last year and joined our council. To accomplish all the
above, it would have been impossible on my own. I must thank the tremendous
amount of hard work of my executive. We have a very vibrant Council and it
shows each and every year when we look at our accomplishments. It does not stop
there. We have a tremendous amount of help from other members who are not
specifically on the executive, however they are a
major part of our team. Thanks to Bro. Ulric Renaud & his wife Mary-Ann for their continued hard
work as our Bingo Chairman. Brother Phil Lefrancois
who takes care of our Recreational functions and our meat draw every month. Rose Meloche who takes care of our seniors program every month.
To Bro. Jeremie Bornais, our Fraternal Benefits Advisor & our Financial
Secretary Dale Martin for their hard work help us get many members through
their degree’s over the past year. I would also like to thank our PGK. Eli
Bertrand for his continued support, his guidance and his leadership in supporting
me in my 1st year as Grand Knight. And finally thanks to our Manager
Sue Deschamp, who helped me tremendously with all the
many K of C functions over the past year.
At our May General Dinner Meeting we held
our elections for the 2004 – 2005 Executive. Thank you to all who ran for
positions. I would also like to thank our outgoing executive. Thanks to Bro.
Frank Van der Pryt for his many years on our
executive. Frank has decided to take a break from the executive as his term for
trustee has expired, but has agreed to remain our bulletin chairman which is
very much appreciated. I would also like to thank Bro. Robert Renaud for his help over the last year as our outside
guard.
Congratulations to the following Brothers who were elected to the 2004
-2005 Executive. 3rd – Year Trustee – Bro. Gary Gardin,
Outside Guards – Bro. Al O’Neil & Bro. Jeff Drouillard.
Well, the month of June is traditionally
busy for our hall, however not to busy for the K of C. Please remember that we
have upcoming elections for our Columbian Club @ the June 9th,
dinner meeting. Please come out to the meeting and help elect the executive of
the Columbian Club for 2004 – 2005.
On Saturday June 19th, our 4th
Degree Assembly with hold a banquet at the Amherstburg
K of C in celebration of 10 years as an
assembly. Please see Bro. Jeremie Bornais for tickets. Tickets are going very
fast as they are expecting a full house.
On Saturday August 14th, we are
holding our Annual Soft Ball game with our sister council from
I would also like to report on the 101st
In closing, I would like to wish each and
every Brother Knight & there families a very safe & happy summer. As a
reminder, there will be no General Dinner meetings held in the summer months of
July & August, but they will resume on the 2nd Wednesday of
September.
And lastly, I would like to thank my Deputy
Grand Knight, Bro. Dave Taylor and his wife Debbie for there support and
continued hard work over the last year and especially my wife Marla for her
support, understanding and patience during my tenure as Grand Knight of your
Council!
Have a great summer and please GET

COLUMBIAN CLUB REPORT

FAIRWELL
I just wanted to take this final moment to
say farewell as your Columbian Club President for the past two years. WOW.
What a learning experience and an adventure. It helps to be a part of a TEAM that is lead
by a very supportive ‘Management Board’ and by ‘You’ the Membership who through
your patronage and volunteering incorporates the Espirt
de Corps in the big picture of TEAM Experience.
I hope that the pending elections will reward me to stay active as a
Director and your Security Manager.
Until then, see you at our special events.
THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS
Thank you for your
assistance. We have been very busy tidying up loose ends before the
summer-months siesta time.
·
Thank you to all the ‘Host Teams’ and their
membership who actively volunteer through out the year to work at the monthly
Fish Fries and the spring Smelt Fry Events.
·
Thanks to Grand Knight Chuck Roy, and the
following Brothers, Leo Deschamp, Gary Gardin and Eli Bertrand for the
additional food preparation sink recently installed in the kitchen.
·
A Special Thank you is extended to the “Dusty
Dozen” for coming out on Sunday morning (May 16th) to remove the
old AND install the new ceiling tiles in the Main Hall Banquet Room. We can sincerely say that the entire K of C
building is ‘smoke free’. Thank you Chuck Roy, Dave Taylor, Gary Gardin, Eli
Bertrand, Leo Deschamp, Dale Martin,
