CHAPLAINS REPORT

Brothers,

Our modern world for the most part, does not consider marriage as a Holy Sacrament.  It reduces it to the status of a merely human contract.  The two evils which bring about this changed attitude are selfishness and pleasure-seeking.  However, Christ’s presence at the marriage can point out the truth to all those who look for it.

That God is the author of marriage is clearly taught in the “Old Testament”.  “Male and female, God created them.”  Also, “You made Adam and gave him Eve for a helper.”  The New Testament teaches the same.  “What therefore God has joined together, let no one put asunder.”  “A man shall leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife.”  The Catholic Church teaches the same.”  “God is the creator of the society which is the family; (Pius the X11) and “Matrimony was not instituted by men, but by God.”  The natural law points to God as the author of marriage.  He created men and women with complimentary characteristics.  He implanted in them an attraction that called for marriage.  Our study of human history points to the belief that God is the author of marriage.  It has been recognized as a sacred institution, even by the most primitive tribes and any other attitude taken by a group or race of people has led to the decay of that civilization.

                To be continued.

Yours in Christ

Fr. Leo Lariviere, Chaplain

COLUMBIAN CLUB REPORT

Dear Brother Knights,

COLUMBIAN CLUB REPORT

JUNE 2005

Where has the last 12 months gone?  It seems like yesterday that I sat down to prepare my first report as president of the Columbian Club.  It certainly has been an eye opening experience.  Being involved with the affairs of the club on a daily basis is quite different than what I was used to when I sat as a director.  Signing the cheques to pay for things like hydro and gas makes my household bills pale in comparison.  It certainly costs a lot of money to keep our hall up and running.  Having said that, I am happy that the actions of the Columbian Club board has resulted in a substantial increase in our revenue stream to pay all these bills.  The biggest reason for this increase in revenue has been the introduction of broasted chicken in our clubroom and for special events in our main hall.  Since the number of weddings has been way down for the last few months the chicken has made up for the shortfall.

The best thing about the past 12 months has been the caliber of people on the board of directors.  Each one of them brings something special to the table and all of our meetings have been productive.  A big thanks to the membership for electing such a great team.  It has been my pleasure to work with them for the past year.

Fraternally Yours,

Gary Gardin

Columbian Club President

The following charities were supported during the month of March:

(1)     Hospice of Windsor & Essex Cty.

(2)     Colchester North Firefighters Assoc.

(3)     School Bursaries.

POSTPONED!!!!

16th ANNUAL MUSIC FESTIVAL – CO-AN PARK, MCGREGOR

Plans are not being made for the Music Festival at Co-An Park, McGregor, normally held in June in support of the Windsor-Essex Cty Cancer Foundation.  There has been a change in committee members and we have had to cancel this year’s event.  We are however preparing for the 2006 Music Festival.

This event has been held over many years and has raised just over $45,000 in support of the purchase of equipment for the Cancer Centre, for the cancer patients of Windsor and Essex County.  All of the proceeds from this day’s event go to the Cancer Centre Foundation (Registration #890493562RR0001).

The number of cancer patients in Windsor and Essex County increases each year and the funds raised from this event next year will go towards the purchase of a MRI machine that will be up and operating in February of 2006, located at the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre.

We will be in touch with you next year and will ask for your support, thank you for your many years of support and dedication to this event.  Talk to you beginning 2006.

If you require further information please feel free to contact the Chair of this event, Terry Renaud at 726-4979.

DISTRICT DEPUTIES REPORT

Dear Brother Knights,

June is the final month for this fraternal year. The elections are complete and the new executive will be standing in the wings waiting to take over. At the time of the writing of this article all but two of the council elections in District 88 will be complete. There will be a new Grand Knight in McGregor with very little change in Windsor, Essex, Maidstone and LaSalle. The councils still have a couple of weeks to make that last ditch effort to get their quotes for insurance or membership. There will be one more degree in Windsor on June 26th if we get the new members form 100’s passed through the membership. I would like to thank the executives and the membership in all the councils in the District it has been a pleasure working with you over the past year. All the councils have done an excellent job of recruiting and retention. For the executives not returning next year, you can be proud of the work that you have done to help your councils grow and improve. Thank you all. For the returning executives of the councils, I offer you this challenge. Continue to take that leadership role and help the new members of the executive learn the way the council should be run. Let them know that their ideas are valuable and their position is important. To the new members of the executive please get involved right away. Do not be afraid to offer up your ideas in the executive meetings. You may be surprised how open the other members are to new projects. Your new project may be the one that helps the council get an award at the 2006 convention or bring in the members that puts the council over the top for membership and insurance. It will be up to the new executives with the help of the council membership to make the coming fraternal year another banner year. Well, it starts again in July - are you up to the challenge?

I would ask that all the members of the councils in District 88 keep the family of Brother Brian Carr in your prayers. Brother Brian was a long standing Treasurer of St. Mary’s Council 9226. Brother Brian passed away on May 14th 2005. He will be greatly missed.

Fraternally Yours,

Gordon Edwards
