CHAPLAINS REPORT

Brothers,

The Pope’s devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary is well known.  On many of his trips he has visited and prayed at the shrine of Our Lady.  In all his homilies and speeches, he presents Mary as a mother who is attentive to all her children’s needs, as well as the model of faith and hope.

While he was taken to the hospital immediately after the attempt on his life in 1981, John Paul 11 was in terrible pain and kept repeating many short prayers.  A priest who accompanied him to the hospital reported that during those frantic moments in the ambulance the Pope repeated the words; Mary, my Mother; Mary my Mother.”

On October 16th, the Pope John Paul 11 declared October 2002 to October 2003 the year of the Rosary!  In doing so he has offered another set of mysteries to accompany the traditional meditation on the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious mysteries in the life of Jesus and Mary.  These mysteries are intended to enrich the traditional prayer, not replace any part of it.

The new mysteries are centered on Jesus’ public ministry.  The Holy Father has called them the “Mysteries of light”.  They call us to meditate on Jesus public ministry:  1:Our Lord’s Baptism in the Jordan, 2:  Our Lord’s holy Manifestation at the wedding of Cana, 3:  Our Lord Proclaims the Kingdom of God and calls us to conversion. 4:  Our Lord’s transfiguration, 5:  Our Lord’s institution of the Eucharist as the Sacramental Expression of the Paschal Mystery.

Why are they called the Mysteries of Light?”

Through the signs and miracles, His preaching and the gift of Himself through the Eucharist, Jesus transforms our lives, just as light transforms a darkened room.  As the Holy Father noted in his letter, the Rosary, especially with the additional meditations on Jesus’ compassionate and loving work in the world, can bring that same transforming light to a world darkened by “ the seductions of the drug culture, the lure of an unbridled hedonism, the temptation to violence, and the manifold expression of meaninglessness and despair” today.

The month of May is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.  It might be an excellent occasion to think about the daily decade.  Fortunately, the joke of the daily decade is easy and it’s burden light.  It takes no more than a few minutes, less than one percent of the 1440 minutes God grants us daily.

The decade can be said anytime.  Some add it to their morning devotion, before undertaking the day’s tasks; others opt for noon hour, still, others wait until evening to give the day the Marian touch.

`May the chains of her Rosary tie together in the bonds of charity and peace, all of us as individuals, as Fraternal organization, within the families, and all her children throughout the world.

In Christ and Mary,

Fr. Leo Lariviere, Chaplain

GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT

Brothers,

Spring has now arrived. The warmer weather is finally upon us. Brothers please keep Bro. Dick Gignac and his family in your prayers on the recent passing of his wife Corrine.

I would first like to correct the helper list for our St. Patrick’s Day celebration we had at our hall on March 17th. The following people were also a great help. Thanks to Penny Gardin, Marcella Martin, Bro. Butch Roehler and his wife Sharon, Shelly Lefrancois, Bro. Wayne Hanson, Bro. Ron Hamelin, DGK Dave Taylor and our cook Janine “ Queen “ Bissonette.

As we are getting closer to the Ontario State Convention in May, we are also slowly running out of time to sell the Car Raffle Tickets. Please call me at any time if you would like to buy or sell some tickets. Tickets are also available from the bartenders in the Club Room. I would also ask any of our members who have taken tickets to sell to please have the money and/or left over tickets back to me by the General Dinner Meeting in May.

I would like to recognize the continued hard work of our Squires & Squirettes. On March 27th, I had the pleasure along with my wife Marla in attending the Squirettes Of Mary Banquet @ their Annual Provincial Convention. I would like to congratulate the Squirettes on their recent awards at this year’s convention. I would like to congratulate Elise Bergeron on being the recipient of the Squirette Of The Year for all the Circlettes in Ontario. The McGregor Circlette also received Circlette Of The Year and a 3rd award for Service in the Community. We are very proud of our Squirettes for their accomplishments. These achievements and the many other ones from over the past many years by both the Squires & the Squirettes truly demonstrate that these young people are our leaders of tomorrow. Keep up the tremendous work that you do.

As Grand Knight, Marla & I had the pleasure of attending the Squires Year end Educational Trip to Toronto. It was a very well organized and an excellent learning experience for all who attended. Thank you to all the Squires & Councilors for being such great hosts.

Fish Fry(s) this month are sponsored by the Squirettes Of Mary. They will be held on May 14th & May 28th.

There will also be a Smelt Fry on Friday May 7th in lieu of the monthly Spaghetti Dinner. Please come out & support the many great functions at our hall.

On May 9th “Mothers Day” the annual Mothers Day Breakfast will be held @ our hall serving from 9:00 – 11:00AM.

On May 30th, our Council will hold a Corporate Communion Breakfast after the 10 AM Mass in our hall. The cost will be by donation with the proceeds going to St. Vincent de Paul in McGregor. Please come out for fellowship and a great Breakfast.

At the May General Dinner Meeting, we will hold elections for our 2004 / 2005 Knights of Columbus Executive for our Council. Nominations were held at the April Dinner Meeting. Nominations will be reopened before the election takes place for all positions. Please review the April Newsletter for all responsibilities of the executive positions. If you know someone whom you feel would be a great candidate, please come out to the meeting and nominate them. After the election for all positions have concluded, we will open up nominations for the executive of the Columbian Club Board of Directors for the 2004 / 2005 fraternal year. Nominations will reopen in June before the election takes place for the Columbian Club Board.

In closing, have a great month and please Get Involved In Your Council!!!

Fraternally Yours,

Chuck Roy

DISTRICT DEPUTIES REPORT

Dear Brothers:

April showers bring May flowers, April nominations bring May elections. This will be a very big month for Ontario State Council’s. Councils will be holding their elections and the State will be holding its election at the Convention. We all know that this is the big election year for them. Several candidates are running for the Wardens position. Councils please make sure that your representatives going to convention know whom the majority of the members want elected. This will enable them to vote for the candidate that the council favours. After all this could be your State Deputy in ten years. I have to give a big hand to anyone who is willing to throw his hat into the ring and stand for a position on State Board. This for most can be a twelve year commitment.

In the local level however this is not the case. For most of us the local council can be a life time commitment. This is evident in the life and twenty five plus year members that we have active in our councils. Many of our active members move in and out of positions on the executive through out their whole life with the council. So if you feel it is time for you to serve your council in a position then make sure a member knows so they can nominate you. Once again I would encourage any members to step up and stand for a position on the executive. You will find it very rewarding. Make sure you understand what is required of you if you are elected to a position on the executive. This information is available, you just have to ask any of the current or former executives and they can help you. Councils need strong leadership to continue to grow. Members need strong leaders to continue to come up with new members, programs and activities, to serve our churches, charities and communities.

Please members get out to the May meeting vote and support the election of your new executive.

Fraternally

Gordon Edwards

District Deputy, District 88

Duties of Council Officers For Upcoming Elections

Grand Knight

The grand knight is responsible for the welfare of the council. He presides over council meetings, acts as an ex-officio member of all committees, appoints a membership and programming director, convenes officers for a monthly meeting, and ensures all necessary reports are submitted to the state and Supreme Council. He should also be aware of the council’s financial status and ensure that his signature appears on all checks drawn. The grand knight is a member of the Advisory Board with general supervision of the council’s Columbian Squire circle. For more specific duties and responsibilities, refer to the Grand Knight’s Handbook (#915).

Chaplain

The chaplain is the spiritual advisor of the council. He is expected to make a report at council meetings on religious matters. The grand knight appoints a priest in accordance with any rules established by the bishop of the diocese to serve as council chaplain. For more specific duties, responsibilities and eligibility, refer to the Chaplain’s Handbook (#945).

Deputy Grand Knight

The deputy grand knight is second in command. He assists the grand knight with council affairs and fulfills all duties assigned to him by the grand knight. Should the grand knight be absent from a council meeting, the deputy grand knight will preside. He is chairman of the council’s retention committee and also a member of the Advisory Board charged with overseeing the council’s sponsored Columbian Squires circle.

Chancellor

The chancellor has a variety of responsibilities. Primarily, he assists the grand knight and the deputy grand knight in the execution of their duties and oversees the council in both their absences. He is charged with strengthening the members’ interests in council activities. The chancellor is chairman of the admission committee and a member of the Columbian Squires circle ceremonial team.

Recorder

The recorder is similar to a court reporter or a secretary. He is responsible for maintaining a true record of all actions of the council and it’s correspondence. A Recorder’s Minute Book (#1043) is available from the Knights of Columbus Supply Department for keeping a record of council meetings.
