CHAPLAINS REPORT
Brothers,
Candlemas: February 2nd, when Jesus was 40
days old Mary and Joseph took Him to the temple in Jerusalem to present Him to
the Lord. At this time also Mary went
through the ceremony of purification prescribed for a mother who has given
birth to her first child.
While
the Holy Family was in the temple, a saintly old man named Simeon walked up to
them. He took the child Jesus in his
arms and told God he called Jesus “a” light of revelation to the gentiles and a
glory for Thy people Israel.”
The
Church celebrates these events on February 2nd, feast of the
Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Recalling the words of St. Simeon, the priest blesses the candles before
Mass. The candles are lit to honour
Christ the Light of the World. The
feast is called Candlemas i.e. the Mass of the Candles.
It
is customary for Catholics to obtain blessed candles for their homes on this
day. They are lighted in time of
sickness or danger. They are also
lighted on the table in the sick room when the priest comes to bring the
Sacrament of the sick.
Catholics
should gladly make use of the sacramental and special blessings of the
Church. It is true that these are
elements in the practice of the faith which are of greater importance: the keeping of the commandments for instance
and the right use of the sacraments especially of compassion and Holy
Communion. To neglect these essentials,
while being strongly attached to the receiving of the blessed candles, ashes
and palms is to have things badly out of proportion.
Nevertheless
it remains true that the Church places high value on her blessings and
sacraments. They serve to lift up a
man’s heart in the service of God. They
have given him an opportunity to prove that he wishes to subordinate all that
he has and all his material possessions to God’s will. Because their right use inspires good and devout thoughts, they serve as a
channel through which God’s grace comes into man’s soul.
Yours
in Christ,
Fr. Leo Lariviere

Brothers,
We are more than half way into our year and making preparations for
the Knights of Columbus Convention.
This month we are going to vote for the delegates who will represent our
council at the convention.
Also, this month we will have some good events in the planning. We are going to have a Chicken & Sliders
Night on February 21. Tickets are
available at our Club Room and must be bought in advance. No tickets will be sold at the door.
The following day we are hosting our annual Beach Party. We usually have a sellout event so buy your
tickets early. Tickets are available at
the Club Room, and you have a choice of steak or chicken dinners.
The Boy Scouts are having a breakfast on Sunday February 23. The breakfast is after the 10 o’clock mass
and the cost is a minimal $4.00. Your
support is very important.
At our January dinner meeting, I made comments about moving our
annual members only Christmas Party at the beginning of December. This would allow our members to attend our K
of C party who are in conflict with their company party. Also in the discussion stage is our annual
appreciation night. We could hold this
event sometime in January?
The reason for these moves is to relieve the congestion of events
that occur the week or so before Christmas.
After our meeting in January, I was pleased to hear a lot of members who
agreed with the move. Your comments on
this matter would be appreciated.
Finally, a big thank you goes to Penny Gardin for once again
providing a beautiful Afghan, which we raffled, the center pieces, and the
angels given to the ladies as they came in at our Christmas party. Also, to Gary and his family who came up
with some kind of medieval torture for the unsuspecting participants. What’s for the next year?
Thought for the month:
“We must not build the
future for our youth. We must build our
youth for the future.”
FFranklin D. Roosevelt
A good reason to have a squire and squirette circle.
Fraternally,
Elie
Bertrand
Grand
Knight

COLUMBIAN CLUB REPORT
Brothers:

IS IT SPRING YET?
February appears to be a common
vacation time for several of our members AND many annual snowbirds travelling
south to beat the cold snap and snow shoveling. If you can’t beat ‘em – join ‘em. Our entire family took a once in a lifetime chance to ALL go
south together. With that many people,
we each brought back some canned sunshine! But, the customs officers seized the
cans. They said it was quarantined because
the contents classify as an agricultural product. As we left the airport, we noticed each shivering customs
officers to be cudgeling a can between their legs. Go figure?
FISH FRYS: “Thank you” to G/K
Eli Bertrand for covering for me at the January Fish Frys events.
REMINDERS: Fry Dates - February 14th
and February 28th
Chicken & Sliders - February 21st
SUNDAY OPENINGS: On January 5th
the Columbian Club hosted ‘Sunday Openings’ from 1130a/m to 8:00p/m. We were previously going to host a grand
opening on Super Bowl Sunday (Jan/26th). However with the McGregor
Roadhouse being closed during renovations and re-licensing, our Clubroom took
advantage to establish some clientele before the football game and hopefully to provide an increased
service for our McGregor community.
The Board is still in planning stages to provide a Family breakfast menu
following Church Mass.
WEB SITE: Thank you to Brother Murray Kirzinger for a
job well done. Murray has been putting
our council in a high-tech mode and every month our web site gets better and
better. If you didn’t realize, you can
access your “monthly bulletin” and “photographs” taken at our Club’s special
events. The web covers information
inclusive of the Knights, Ladies Auxiliary, Squires, Squirettes and information
from the Fr. Louis Boue’ 4th Degree, as well as providing access to
Supreme & State Councils. And I
would be remiss to leave out a source of information from your K of C Insurance
Agent, Bros. J. Bornias. Our The web
