CHAPLAINS REPORT

Brothers,

Man has always felt the need of a priesthood.  Because man has always felt the need of seeking the help of, or appeasing forces higher than himself.  This has always been accomplished by a priesthood whose special duty it has been to act as mediator between man and his deities.  Among ancient peoples this duty was carried out by the heads of families or class.  The same was also true in the early days of Rome.

The fundamental duty of the priest in all times and among all peoples has been to offer sacrifice.  Sacrifice is defined as the offering of a victim to God together with its real or symbolic destruction to show that it has passed entirely out of the hands of the offerer and belongs only to God; and also as a symbol of the punishment or destruction that the offerer has merited by his sins or evil acts.

The concept of the priesthood has not been substantially changed in Christianity.  In the New Testament we find that the priest is still set aside as a mediator between God and man and that his function is still to offer sacrifice.  “For every high priest taken from among men, that he may offer gifts and sacrifice for sins.” says St. Paul.  Jesus Christ Himself was the first and foremost priest, the principal high priest, Who offered Himself to God the Father in expiation for our sins.  He was simultaneously priest and victim, offering and being offered at the same time.  It was the offering which has given man the means of being redeemed from his sins.

It’s this priesthood that Christ has passed on to man.  The Christian concept of the priesthood is basically that to be found in the epistle of St. Paul to the Hebrew:  “For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in the things pertaining to God, that he may offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.:

Today in the Catholic Church, when a man is ordained to the priesthood, he is set aside to share in the priesthood of Christ and thus to offer sacrifice.  “It is the duty of the priest to offer sacrifice,” the ordaining bishop says to the newly ordained priest.  But the sacrifice that he offers is that of Christ Himself.  Christ cannot physically die again.  However, His sacrifice can still be continued and is continued through the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.  In the Catholic Mass, the sacrifice of Christ is re-enacted, and continued for all times through the hands of men, His priests.  It is the means by which individual men make personal contact with the redeeming death of Christ on Calvary.

Because of this, the Catholic Church has always attached the highest importance to its priesthood.  Catholics pay great respect to their priests because they see in them men chosen and endowed with special powers and a special mission.

The importance of the priesthood has been stressed again and again throughout the history of the church.  The training and education of priests has always been one of the primary concerns of the Church.  She realizes that the spiritual health of the mystical Body of Christ-the Church-depends in large part on the devotion, dedication and holiness of the men who make up the ranks of the priesthood.

Yours in the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Leo Lariviere

GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT

Brothers,

Our fraternal year is coming to an end and so is my term as Grand Knight.  I must congratulate the new incoming Grand Knight, Chuck Roy; Deputy Grand Knight, Dave Taylor; Warden, Chris Bergeron; Guard, Robert Renaud; 3 year Trustee Kevin Langlois, and all of the other Executive who were re-elected to their incumbent positions.

I thank all of the executives and other brothers who made my 2 years as Grand Knight a very memorable experience.  The Chairing of events by these brothers is deeply appreciated.

I thank Father Leo our Chaplain for enriching our council with his spiritual strength.  We also offer our congratulations to Father Leo who will celebrate 50 years of service to God and his congregation as a Priest on May 28th, but it will be celebrated on Sunday June 1st.

I thank our Ladies Auxiliary, the McGregorettes, for all of their help and assistance they provided the Knights of Columbus.  Hopefully this good co-operation will continue between the Knights and the Ladies Auxiliary.

I thank the Squires and Squirettes Councilors for their unselfish giving of their energy and time for the betterment of their youth programs.  These leadership programs are instrumental in building character and confidence in these young people, which can only benefit our council and our community.

Last but not least, I thank my wife for all of her assistance and understanding, especially the past 2 years.

Finally, I thank all of you members who participate in our council events.

Though my term is coming to an end there is a new beginning evolving and your support will ensure this council continues to be successful.

DISTRICT DEPUTIES REPORT

Dear Brothers,

The Elections in District 88 are almost complete. By the time you read this report LaSalle’s elections will be history and the new executive for District 88 will be complete. The most significant change was in McGregor Council with the end of a two-year term for Brother Elie Bertrand. Thank you Brother Elie for the work you have done for both the council and the District, I have enjoyed working with you. I know that Brother Elie will still be as busy as ever with the council and the Columbian Club but maybe he will enjoy it more. The new Grand Knight for this Council is Brother Chuck Roy. Welcome Brother Chuck I know that you and your new executive will serve the order well. The rest of the Grand Knights will be staying on for their second year with some subtle changes in their executive. Welcome to all the new members of the executives of the councils of District 88 this is going to be another good year.

On a personal note I would like to take this opportunity to thank a Brother knight from council 3305. After serving on the executive of his council for many years. Brother Jim Shaheen will not be holding one of these positions. Brother Jim decided to decline all nominations to leave room for new members to fill these positions on the executive. Jim and I served our term as Grand Knight together and I think that District 88 may have gained for our efforts. I know that Jim is not going anywhere and will still be very active in the council activities. Thanks Brother Jim it has been great working with you.

The 100th State Convention is finished and it was a great success for more than one reason. First I would like to thank all those members of the District that help make the Essex county hospitality room a reality and success. Special thanks goes out to Brother Jeff Beach for spearheading this effort and to Brother Elie for the fundraiser that jump-started this project. This made for a wonderful weekend in Toronto. The other reason that the convention was a great success is that Council 3305 in Essex came away with the Best Overall Council Award. They received several other awards for council, family, and youth in their division as well. Great job, Grand Knight Jeff Beach, Deputy Grand Knight Tom Bonneau and the executive of Council 3305 what a way to finish a year of hard work.

We are coming to the end of the fraternal year and I would like to thank all the Councils in District 88. You all have made my family and me feel like we are a part of your councils every time we visit your events. You have also work with me to make this a great year, but most of all you have helped to make this a fantastic district.

Fraternally

Gordon Edwards

District Deputy
