CHAPLAINS REPORT
Dear Brother Knight’s:
Each year we enjoy
the warmth of the Christmas spirit…a time when even uncongenial characters
become more congenial. There is more
brotherly love and forbearance evident than any other time of the year. Human nature seems to be softened by the
spirit of the feast. As the great day
approaches a certain glow seems to grow within us; eventually spreading to
every part of the body. Finally on the
25th of December we are filled with the spirit of charity. We greet all our neighours and friends with
a warm handshake…our relatives with a kiss.
Only a few weeks
have passed since we celebrated Christ’s birth; but the warm spirit of the
feast has already largely faded. The
Christmas trees and gifts seem almost out of place. The general impression prevails:
“It’s over, let’s forget about it and get back to normal,” but for we
Christians this general impression should not be the case. The true Christmas spirit should be a
lasting thing-not something which disappears in a few days. Of course it is only right that it should
reach a peak at Christmastime…but it should not disappear immediately and
completely the next day. The kindness
and thoughtfulness which we felt on that day should last. The wonderful attitudes which we had during
the joyful season ought to be carried on .
To continue to promote harmony and peace, to remain patient, forgiving,
understanding and long suffering…..these should not be lost, but rather carried
along into the new year.
If we look back at
the first Christmas, we see these thoughts verified by the principals
involved. The central figure, Christ
Himself, came amid suffering. He was
far from comfortable and he endured it for others. Mary and Joseph were called outcasts that day. The shepherds were enduring the elements
when the angels came to them. The Magi
had to travel a long and hard journey to reach Christ. Mortification and unselfishness were
required of all of them as it will be required of us.. if we wish to prolong
the Christmas spirit. We must forget
ourselves and think of others. To be
kind and forgiving calls for sacrifice and suffering. To be congenial often calls for great unselfishness. If we are to be truly Christians, followers
of Christ, then we must be willing to sacrifice and mortify ourselves in order
that each day will become the kind of day that His birthday was.
It
is not too late to make a resolution…let’s try to prolong the spirit of
Christmas in our heart and soul. It’s a
good way to practice many of the Christian virtues. Certainly, it will demand sacrifice and unselfishness; but then,
that’s what Christianity means.
Thoughtless people will even try to take advantage of us; but by setting
the example…by lighting a small fire, maybe we will be able to spread the
Christmas spirit to the rest of the year.
Maybe we will re-open the eyes
and hearts of the worldly people around us.
Maybe we will make our home…our community…our world, a little better
place in which to live. Maybe we will
help spread the message of Christ when we “Go and teach all nations.”
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Leo Lariviere
Brothers:
The free Turkey Dinner hosted by the
Squirettes and Squires was a huge success.
Over 400 people attended the event, which was more than was
anticipated. Congratulations to the
young men and women, and the councillors for handling the overwhelming
turnout. A job well done indeed!
The Members Only Christmas Party was a
triumph! Everyone enjoyed themselves
with feasting on baby back ribs and chicken as well as the after dinner
entertainment provided by the Gardin family.
Thank you for another fun filled game and thanks to the participants for
being such good sports. I certainly
want to give Penny Gardin a big special thank you for all the gifts she
provided for the ladies and for the table decorations. A lot of time and effort went into them and
we all appreciated your special touch.
In the past month or so, we have had
Brother Knight Dan Sauve do some welding for us. As you might have noticed, we’ve moved the yellow sign and
secured it under our big K of C sign.
He welded the frame to the post.
We also had it wired so that it will be lit and visible at night. Dan also built us a stand for a small safe
that was on the floor. The safe has now
been secured to the stand. Dan has also
been busy building us a new charcoal barbeque (the old one was full of
holes). It’s a well made unit with
thicker walls that should last us a long time.
I’d like to extend a big thanks
to Dan for the speed in which he finished these projects and for generously
donating all of his labour.
The month of February may be short but we
have many events happening. We have the
Fish Fries on the 8th and 22nd as well as a Spaghetti
Night on the 15th. On the
following day, the 16th, there is the Bowlers BBQ. On the 23rd there is our annual
Beach Party. Steak BBQ tickets are
available at the Club Room. It’s a fun
night as well as a fundraiser for the K of C.
Our share of the profits will be designated to help a fellow K of C
member who is in a wheel chair and desperately needs a “cough assist”
device. The Squires are the ones who
are spearheading this project as the young man who needs this device is 25
years old and was a Squire.
Reading my Fourth Degree bulletin, an
article about “The Right To Life” caught my attention. It mentions erecting a “Tomb for the
Unborn”. We erected one in front of St.
Clement Church. I wonder how many
people are aware of its existence and its meaning. The article also quotes Proverb 31:8 “Open your mouth for the
speechless, in the cause of all who are appointed to die”.
Fraternally,
Elie Bertrand
Grand Knight
