CHAPLAINS REPORT
Did you celebrate
Easter? Did you attend the Easter Vigil
or one of the crowded Masses on Easter Sunday?
Did you attend a happy family gathering or celebrate the day a little
more quietly (and peacefully)? In any
case, Easter is a day of joy, and rightly so.
We celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, our God and Leader, from
the dead. Everything He preached –
about loving the poor, helping the sick, caring for the weak and rejected, He
put into practice during the Holy Week and His Resurrection on Easter.
Christianity is
not a “Spectator Sport”. We can’t sit
back and say to ourselves how great it is to be a Catholic and be on the
winning side, to have that nice Pope John Paul ll and Jesus Christ on our side! Jesus didn’t sit back – He got His face and
hands dirty and covered with spit, and His back bloodied with those whips, and
a terrible headache from those thorns.
He shed the last drop of His Blood for us – He willingly became the poor,
the sick, the weak and the rejected during Holy Week; and His Resurrection
proved His divinity, that He wasn’t kidding, that He indeed can and did triumph
over all our human weaknesses and did transform us with all our weakness into
His chosen people, redeemed and sanctified and transformed by His blood, That’s
why we celebrate Easter! Christ has
died! Christ is risen! Alleluia!
But, if
Christianity, for Jesus, wasn’t
“spectator sport” but He considered it necessary to give His very life
in the process of redeeming us, so we too must expect to get our hands dirty,
to suffer, to be rejected and spit upon, to give everything we have, including
our last drop of blood, to be true followers of Christ, to be real Catholics.
Easter is a time of rejoicing - that Christ
has triumphed over our weak human nature - that Jesus has won for us the graces
and help we need to share in His triumph over our human condition of weakness
and sinfulness but it carries with it a message of eternal importance in a
challenge for all of us-that just as Christ paid a tremendous price for His
Easter - we have to do the same. We
have to work hard at being real Christians and get our hands dirty in the
process just as Jesus did. We have to identify
with and help the poor and identify with the sick, the needy, the rejected just
as Jesus did. Christianity costs a lot
- it cost Jesus everything. We have to
be willing to pay the same Price.
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Leo Lariviere

GRAND
KNIGHT’S REPORT
Brothers:
Our Fraternal year will soon come to one end. However, that does not mean that the Knight’s of Columbus are slowing down, only the year.
On Friday the 29th of March (Good Friday) our annual fish fry was threatened with a power failure. The lights went out but quick thinking members soon had a plan to re-establish some lights. Within a short period of time generators were brought in with powerful lights and extension cords. It gave us enough light to resume our fish fry. At the same time some members found boxes of candles to put on tables for a candle light supper. We still managed to serve some 350 people on that night. There were some 30 Knight’s of Columbus and their wives on that night whose resourcefulness, dedication and hard work saved the day. I thank you all. I also would like to thank all of our patrons who believed in us and stayed for the fish fry.
On April 5th, we had our first Chili Cook Off. We had some 14 contestants who made some great chili. We thank you all for participating and we thank our four judges and their wives who took time out of their busy lives for this event.
At our April General Meeting, we had nominations for K of C executives. In May we are going to reopen the nominations and have elections. It’s a steak dinner on that night and we ask that you call the hall if you plan to attend the meeting. We usually have a good turnout on that night and hope it continues. We also have nominations on that night for Columbian Club executives with elections in June.
Let’s not forget the Ladies Auxiliary annual Mother’s Day breakfast on May 12th.
Also in May we will attend the annual K of
C Convention in Toronto on the long weekend.
Finally, I hope to see you all at our next
two meetings and remember - “A man is not old until his regrets take the place
of dreams” - John Barrymore.
Fraternally,
Elie Bertrand
