CHAPLAINS REPORT

Brothers,

These are clustering days for us here in McGregor.  The bishop has asked us to fully cluster with our neighbor parish of St. Joseph’s in River Canard.  Presently, our Clustering Team has had many meetings with our Parish Council and the leaders at St. Joseph

It's true, that the reason for this twinning of the two parishes is partly due to the shortage of priests - but also, our faith community is changing.  We both have large churches.  We can both hold many parishioners.  Thank God they built big churches back in 1903 when St. Clements was constructed.

Today, our Masses have lots of room for more.  Some Catholics are baptized and receive the sacraments but they are not always faithful to the Sunday Celebration. Our pews are not as full as they could be. That is OK, because God is sending us today better and braver people who are faithful to Mass despite these changing and challenging times we all live in.  Some still would never miss Mass.  Soon one pastor now will have to look after more people, with two churches, and less Masses.  A fuller church makes for a better celebration.

We are not alone.  The church is more then just the priest.  We have men and women of all ages who volunteer, lead, and take on new responsibilities as pastoral people.  Soon 15 new married permanent Deacons will be helping in our Diocese.  Many people are chipping in to fill the shoes as pastoral workers.  Thank God, for the Knights and the Catholic Women who work endlessly to add spirit to our community and our parish.

We continue to go forward – into these clustering times of church change.  It’s the Lord’s House – He will not fail us!

Yours in Christ

Fr. Bill Kornacker

GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT

Brothers,

It is with regret I must inform the membership that I have received two resignations in the past week. Brother Ron Hamelin has resigned from his position as Chief Councilor for the Squires and has also resigned his position as treasurer of our Council #2844, to be effective as soon as an elected replacement takes over. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Brother Ron for all the years he has dedicated and all he has done for the Squires program and our Council. He will be missed.

Nominations will be opened for the position of Treasurer at the November general meeting, with the election for this position to be held at the December general meeting. We are also starting our search to find a replacement for the Chief Councilor, if there is a brother interested or if you have someone in mind please contact me @ 737-8887.

Moving on to other business, the month of October was an event filled month with fish frys, spaghetti dinner, CWL breakfast and St Ursule School BBQ and I would like to thank all of the volunteers (too many to mention them all) who have helped make these events a success. I am very proud of this council and our many dedicated members who step forward as soon as I ask for help. So I need to say it one more time THANK YOU.

Upcoming events:

1. Our annual awards banquet will be on November 12.  Make sure you contact Banquet chairman Brother Paul Sylvestre for tickets.

2. Make sure you support our Squires and Squirettes in their annual can drive for St Vincent De Paul Society on November13 , they kids will be going door to door in and around Mcgregor. Please give generously!!

MEMBERSHIP! MEMBERSHIP! Brothers to keep our council strong and vital we need to continue to recruit new members so I would like to encourage every brother to try to recruit a new member. St. Clements Council 2844 is a great council because of our membership.  Lets share this with other catholic gentlemen in our community.

Fraternally Yours

Dave Taylor

Grand Knight

COLUMBIAN CLUB REPORT

Brothers,

Lots to report this month. There's some good news and some bad news.  The bad news first.  Effective October 30th we will be serving our last Sunday morning breakfast.  We will continue to serve special breakfasts such as C.W.L., Mother and Daughter, Mothers Day etc.  These breakfasts were doomed from day one.  We advertised the heck out of the very first one back in April and ended up with about 75 people.  This was our chance to impress but for whatever reason not enough staff was put in place to deal with such a large crowd and some customers waited for up to 2 hours for their food.  In this business you seldom get a second chance and people told me they would never be back.  We've been struggling ever since then trying to get our numbers up.  The board has decided to move on.

The good news is that the lunch business continues to grow despite the end of the golf season.  We will be expanding the menu and adding more variety including salads, snacking foods and desserts.

Currently in the evenings in the clubroom from 5 to 11 p.m. only hot dogs and hamburgers are offered.  We will be adding snack foods such as mozzarella sticks, onion rings, pizza nuggets, mushroom caps, chips and salsa, shrimp in a basket and more.

Currently we only have food events on 3 Fridays a month.  We are intending to offer food events  every Friday of the month.  Stay tuned.

Sleemans Brewery would like to introduce their products to our club.  After the November 9th general meeting we will be having some complimentary product for our members to sample.

New Year's Eve parties have been pretty dull the last few years so it's been decided to inject some new life into this event.  With the help of the new Manager's culinary skills we will be tweaking the menu beyond the usual surf and turf offering and adding a live band.  The band 20/40 with Chris Lepain will be performing for your listening and dancing pleasure.  Apparently they play a wide variety of music and guarantee to get the place rocking.  We are trying to hold ticket prices the same as last year, but they could be slightly more and should be available by the time you read this.  There will be reserved seating in both the big hall and clubroom.  Buy your tickets and reserve your seating early.  Tickets will be limited to 400.

We continue to put our financial house in order.  Through judicial negotiations on costs with our vendors we have been able to improve our profitability substantially with the same or better quality products while maintaining the same selling prices.  We should have been doing this years ago!

The Columbian Club Board loves numbers and reports.  Fortunately our new Manager Sean also loves numbers and reports.  So we're on the same wavelength.  It's really interesting to have reports to establish benchmarks to measure the effectiveness of our decisions.    There is still a lot of work to be done as we target and study each type of function that we offer.  We can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  Hopefully it's not a train.

Gary Gardin

President
